Face and double face grinding
Face grinding and double face grinding are hard finishing processes to create or machine flat surfaces on workpieces and improve the surface finish of the workpieces.
In face grinding, a workpiece is placed on a flat, horizontal surface that serves as a grinding table. Above the workpiece is a grinding machine equipped with a rotating grinding wheel. This grinding wheel moves either forward and backward or in a rotating motion. The workpiece is pressed against the grinding wheel to remove material and finish the surface. Surface grinding is often used for workpieces with large surfaces and tight tolerances to achieve a very flat surface.
Double face grinding is a variation of face grinding that uses two grinding wheels. The two grinding wheels are mounted on opposite sides and work on the workpiece from both sides at the same time. This allows for greater efficiency and the simultaneous achievement of high accuracy on both sides of the workpiece. Double surface grinding is often used for thinner workpieces or workpieces that require particularly precise parallelism.
Both grinding processes can be used in metalworking, precision component manufacturing, surface finishing and other applications. They offer the ability to produce flat and very accurate surfaces on workpieces needed in a variety of industries. The choice between surface grinding and double surface grinding depends on the specific requirements of the workpiece and the desired tolerances.
In mechanical engineering, it's similar to the automotive industry. Automobile manufacturers work very closely with tire manufacturers, because the car is ultimately only as performant as the tire that puts the power on the road. This interplay also arises within the DVS Group of Companies by equipping forward-looking grinding machines with perfectly matched grinding wheels and dressing rolls that contribute to optimum machine performance as a complete system solution, thus paving the way to "Future Mobility".
- DVS Universal Grinding GmbH offers customer-specific solutions around the technologies of turning as well as cylindrical and face grinding of internal and external diameters in one clamping.
- Founded back in 1871, NAXOS-DISKUS manufactures precision grinding tools for double-sided surface grinding, external cylindrical grinding, centerless grinding, and gear grinding. Depending on the application, the grinding tools are manufactured from conventional abrasive grit to ultra-hard cutting materials such as CBN and diamond.
