About the ring gear

The ring gear, an essential component of planetary gears, plays a decisive role in the transmission of torque and motion. As a large external gear ring with internal teeth, the ring gear interacts directly with the planetary gears and thus opens up a wide range of possible applications.

The ring gear mainly fulfills two important functions within the gearbox:

  • Counter bearing for the planetary gears: The ring gear often acts as a fixed or brakable counter bearing on which the planetary gears roll. In this scenario, the drive is provided by the sun gear, while the output is realized via the planetary gear carriers. This configuration enables precise control and offers the possibility of influencing the movement of the planetary gears.
  • Gearbox output: Alternatively, the ring gear can also serve as the output, with the sun gear providing the input and the planetary gear carriers being braked. This arrangement enables the direct transmission of torque to the ring gear, which is particularly advantageous in specific applications.
